This news article ( http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Chandigarh/Winged-seducer-that-heralds-monsoon/articleshow/4653999.cms )
triggered some googling and I learnt that the pied-crested cuckoo is a migratory bird from South Africa that visits India during the monsoons. And legend has it that this bird drinks nothing but the rainwater and that it dies if the rain does not come on time.
And so far this year , the monsoon has been playing truant ; hence this cuckoo’s song.
I see the Lightning’s razzle-dazzle
Where are You hiding , I puzzle ? !
I hear the Thunder’s rumbling
It doesn’t get Me much smiling .
I watch the Clouds turn black
I wonder when You’ll be back ;
I feel the blowing cool gusty Wind
Then why do You still abscond ?
I notice the fiery Sun softening
It still doesn’t make me beaming ;
I smell the Soil’s pleasant aroma
But Your arrival is still an enigma !
I perceive the Sea is rougher ;
And yearn to hear your laughter ;
I see the Trees swaying wildly
I await Your arrival , anxiously .
My Friend, why do You play truant
Come and make My joy abundant ;
Your arrival has been long overdue
Of what purpose are all these cues ?
Good are all these harbingers
But , where are You , My joy Giver ;
In Your long absence I perish
You My parched spirit nourish .
I want to dance in Your torrent
And rejuvenate My hearts content ;
I want to sing in Your drizzle
And listen to Your voice affable
I drink only from Your shower
No other water drop I touch ever ;
Come and quench My dying thirst
You are My soul’s need , first and last .
Oh seasonal Monsoon
Please come here soon ;
My Dear friend Rain
Come and ease my pain .
Do not my woes prolong
This is a Cuckoo’s song .
